Raku fired ceramic vessel.  The piece has been thrown and  leather hard we apply several layers of terra sigillata and coloured slip and burnish to get a smooth glossy surface. At this stage the pot is bisque fired to 950°c. A layer of resist slip and glaze is applied.  The piece is placed in a raku kiln and fired to 825°c. It is lifted from the kiln when molten and placed in a reduction bin filled with paper and wood chips. A lid is put on allowing the carbon to be trapped by the clay body.   When the piece is removed from the reduction bin a light spray of water is applied and the glaze falls off easily revealing the unique crackle and linear pattern. The lid is made in two parts the bottom section is thrown and the top is handbuilt and joined to the base. It is coated with several layers of terra sigilatta and raku fired, following reduction in the smoke bin it turns black.

Unique one off piece. Size: H:( from top of lid) 30cm x W:17cm

Care of Raku Pottery : Wipe gently with a damp cloth. Due to the low firing process raku ceramics are not shock-resistant nor waterproof or frost proof so suitable for indoor decorative use only.
